The One Rule We Cannot Escape

Every argument you have ever won with another person used the same tool: you asked them to see a harm from the position of the person suffering it. Not from your country's tradition, not from a statute, not from a book only your side accepts. That small act of imagination is common morality. It rests on three ordinary facts: pain is bad whoever feels it, a person is not property, and consent is what separates an invitation from a theft. Nothing beyond that is required, and nothing less will hold.
