Ricardo Flores Magón

1873–1922 · Anarchist communism

Land and liberty, and no government at all.

In their words

“Land and liberty!”

Flores Magón started as a liberal journalist against Porfirio Díaz and ended as the most wanted anarchist in North America. His paper Regeneración, printed from exile in St. Louis and Los Angeles, carried the slogan Tierra y Libertad into the Mexican Revolution and shaped the radical wing of it. He died in Leavenworth prison, where the United States had jailed him for opposing a war it fought on behalf of the same landlords he opposed.

Why it matters for freedom

He insisted the Mexican Revolution was about land and freedom, not about swapping one set of rulers for another.

Who they stood against

the Díaz dictatorship, the American courts that jailed him for his pen, and the revolutionaries who settled for a new government
