Modern Era

Murray Bookchin

1921–2006 · Social ecology

The domination of nature begins with the domination of people.

In their words

“The domination of nature by man stems from the very real domination of human by human.”

A one-time communist organizer who broke with Marxism, Bookchin argued that ecological collapse and political hierarchy have the same root: the habit of commanding. He proposed a municipal politics of face-to-face assemblies, wrote the essays that shaped the Kurdish democratic confederalism of Rojava, and spent his last years quarreling with the anarchists he had inspired about whether they had given up on organization altogether.

Why it matters for freedom

He connected personal liberty to the health of the place you live, and gave stateless democracy a workable design.

Who they stood against

the Marxist left, the bureaucratic state, and later the anti-organizational wing of anarchism
