19th Century
Josiah Warren
1798–1874 · Individualist anarchism
America's first anarchist: sovereignty of the individual, cost the limit of price.
In their words
“Cost is the limit of price.”
Warren founded the first anarchist periodical in America, The Peaceful Revolutionist, after his experience at New Harmony convinced him that imposed communities fail. He advocated equitable commerce, pricing goods at the labor cost of producing them, and the sovereignty of the individual, the principle that no arrangement may override a person's own judgment, from labor organization to marriage.
Why it matters for freedom
He founded an actual voluntary town, testing liberty as a practice rather than a theory.
Who they stood against
the monopoly of land and money that made labor a servant of capital
