1854–1939 · Individualist anarchism
Abolish the four monopolies: land, money, tariffs, ideas.
In their words
“The four great monopolies — money, land, tariff, and patents — are the pillars of the state.”
From his paper Liberty, Tucker argued that most injustice is market interference: monopolies in land, money, patents and tariffs let the state manufacture poverty and then claim it needs the state to police the result. He translated Proudhon and Bakunin, popularized Stirner, and argued that abolishing these privileges, not storming the capital, would dissolve most of government's apparent reason for existing.
Why it matters for freedom
He combined the economics of liberty with its ethics, arguing that a free market dissolves the state's reason to exist.
Who they stood against
the banking monopoly, landlordism, and the courts that enforced both
