Human Trafficking

Ownership of a person is the oldest lie in politics.

To own a person is to make a claim that cannot survive its own logic. If a human being is not property, then no contract, debt, marriage, border, or decree can make them property.

The mechanism of trafficking is almost never a chain. It is debt and deception. A passage that must be repaid at an impossible rate. A job that quietly becomes a captivity. Documents taken. Threats made against a family in another country. The person is, in the only sense that matters, owned: their labour, their body, and their movement all decided by someone else.

The objection is that some of these people agreed. But consent is the entire question, and consent given under coercion, deception, or the threat of starvation is not consent. A promise extracted by fear is a promise the standard does not recognise. This is why the real test is always the same: can the person walk away at any hour, for any reason, with their documents and their dignity intact?

The abolitionist argument began here, and the standard has not changed since.

Ownership of a person is the oldest lie in politics, and it is still a lie.
